Caught on the fly!
Having had a nice session last week at Ellingham catching Rudd on the drop with bread paste I thought I’d try my hand at catching them on my light fly rod.
I got a bit more than I bargained for!
And the Rudd? Yes I caught some of those as well. An interesting day!
12 April 2017
Having enjoyed a wonderful session on a day ticket at Bungay Common I look forward to becoming a season ticket holder in 2017.
A personal best at the Pit
A new personal best – fifteen pound Common Carp caught at Peg 14 at the Lay-by Pit.
Method – a ground baited method feeder, 4inch 10lb hook link with 8 maggots on a size 14 hook.
A monster Pike!
A superb 27lb 4oz Pike caught on the river at Shipmeadow by new Bailiff Steve Lane.
This stretch is becoming increasingly popular as a Pike venue of both by members and day ticket anglers. As a consequence the club is increasing its bailiff visits.
If you intend to fish this water please ensure you are carrying your membership card or day ticket, otherwise you will be asked to leave the waterside.

Another great session at the Lay-by – a 13lb 10oz Common Carp, a Tench 4lb and 2 skimmers around 2lb a piece.
All on banded 8mm pellet at peg 19 on the pole. Not bad for three hours fishing!
Picture taken and fish weighed by Tony Game.

A good morning session at the Lay-by
A good morning session at peg 13 using banded pellet as bait – 6 tench 2 bream 2 big skimmers and I also lost 6 more!
Some good fishing at the Lay-by and on the river
Fished the Lay-by lake March 2016, after the flood. Carp showing well, in my peg, all day, but not interested in my spam bait until 4pm.
Then 3 mirrors largest 4lb 2oz. Finished with a magnificent conditioned 9lb 4oz common. A new personal best.
Came back next day, nothing, frozen. Stuck it out for a few hours went home early. Last year there several tench, best 5-6lbs.
River – a Pike 13 and a half pounds, disappointed, thought I had caught a huge Chub!
21 March 2016
Some good winter fishing at the Lay-by Pit
This nice bag of Perch, Tench, Carp, skimmers and Roach was caught at Peg 31 on 23rd of February.
And this good bag of Roach and Skimmers were caught at Peg 16 on 15th March.
The Pit is fishing well!

Doing the rounds at Ellingham Lake
What an afternoon I had!
Fished all 40 pegs and had fish 5lb and over on every peg. Best peg was peg 2 where I had a 15 pounder.

A near personal best Bream
My only bream of the session at Bungay Layby Pit today but at 7 lb 1
oz, just 4 oz off my pb so I can’t complain!
Double red maggot and gb feeder. Now for one of the “doubles”!!
Fantastic new path and bridge improvements!! Well done Ian, amazing job!!
21 April 2015
Bungay Common fishing well
New chub pb on stick and maggot from bottom end of common today. 5 lb 8 oz and 3 others plus 9 lb of prime roach.

19 February 2015

A very nice Mirror Carp caught from peg 12 came in at just 6lb.
13 November 2014
A 50 year personal best
After 50 years of fishing it was FANTASTIC to get a new PB tench at the Layby Pit today, 6 lb 3 oz and a lovely male fish I think?
All on my own but loads of big fish topping.
Now for the PB bream (7 lb 3 oz) and chub from the river (5 lb 1 oz)!!!
2 November 2014
The youngsters catch the big’uns too!
This nice carp caught by my 9 year old daughter Jenna at Ellingham Hall Lake on 22nd September.
Bait used was Halibut Pellet.
This lake seems absolutely alive with fish!
22 September 2014
Some great birds at Ellingham!
Targeted the roach today with tares but couldn’t get through the carp!
But two appearances from the osprey made it worthwhile, plus
kingfishers, green and great spotted woodpeckers etc.
13 September 2014
A nice mixed bag from Peg 15
A good session at the club pit – 4lb Tench with 7 small Mirrors and two Crucian.
21 August 2014
A nice Chub from Ellingham
A nice Chub caught on the river at Ellingham Mill in fading light. Bait used was cheese.
A great morning on the Lures
It was a very rainy Sunday on the 29th June but it was well worth it. A mornings lure fishing for chub resulted in in 2 chub to 4lb, 4 pike and a perch from the Bungay Common stretch of the Waveney.
29 June 2014
An exhausting day at Ellingham Hall Lake
Had a first fish at the lake yesterday, I am worn out today! A new personal best – 65 Carp , ranging from the baby ones, 12inchers – 15inchers, also equaling my best ever caught 8lb Common
Some of the tiddler carp probably caught more than once.Fish at every cast. I was able to see the fish, feeding at the very edge, when I put sweetcorn in as an offering at my feet, the larger Carp mopped it up. Soon as I dropped the hooked corn in they took it, and spat it out right away!
I changed to floating bread crust, they went mental taking the hook bait! When I ran out of bread, I changed to my usual 8mm hair rigged pellet, and called it a day with the 8lb Common.
Also nice Rudd and Roach to end up with 70 plus fish. I didn’t float fish at all, prefer ledgering.
Some of the 6inch carp had no barbules, if they are Crucian this is another first for me.
16 June 2014
Early morning session at the Lay-by Pit brings a whopper!
Big fish weighed 10lb 1oz, I laid a 4 to 5 lb tench beside it for comparison!
I also had two other Tench and 9 Carp off peg 24. This was all from an early morning session.
4 June 2014
Some nice Tench from the Pit
1 of 5 hard fighting tench from 1lb to 3lb all on a size 14 hook until something big was hooked and bent the hook straight!
All caught at peg 8, caught on float and straight lead with good old corn.
7 May 2014
He’s a Treasure(r)!
Ian Moore, the club’s treasurer had a great session at the club pit on Saturday.
Pictured is a Common of 14lb 1oz which was followed by another of 11lb 6oz and two Tench of four to five pounds.
All were caught on method feeder to the island from peg 24 on sweetcorn.
5 May 2014
The Carp are getting bigger!
This Common Carp, caught on club waters, tipped the scales at 23lb!
A surprise catch at the Lay-by Pit
It was looking like yet another blank day at the pit, my fifth in a row.
I was hoping I might get one or two Roach but at the end of the day, with no bites I hooked, and to my surprise, landed this 12lb Common!
Half an hour later I was into a second, probably double figure, Common but after half an hour, and at the second time to the net it threw the hook and was away.
Still, not a bad result on a 50 year old rod and reel float rig and 2½lb line!
19 April 2014
A cold, wet and windy trip to the pit
Not bad for 5 hours. Tench, Perch, Rudd, Roach, Skimmers and carp.
Oh also a Pike (about two and half foot long – 7 or 8lb with big belly) took worm.
19 March 2014
A rare visitor to the river
A pair of Goosander on the river at Ellingham yesterday which is a first for me on the Waveney.
Although they are fish predators, they ain’t going to be taking anything over 4 oz so less of a problem than the otters.
9 January 2014
Another good Ellingham Chub
Nice Chub caught at Ellingham on Cheese Sunday 4th August 2013
Two good Chub from Ellingham
Two lovely summer evenings produced two chub of 4lb at Ellingham.
One on sweetcorn with a maggott swimfeeder and the other on a hair-rig with a chocolate pellet.
A flying Chub from Wainford
Having had a ghastly time in gusty winds at Wainford stretch B on
season opening day, I went back very early on Sunday morning.
A few tiddlers were about near the sluice, but it wasn’t until I
wandered upstream, beside the big oak tree, that I then noticed the
chub cruising around.
I lost a couple of biguns in the weed, but then banked the pictured fish (roughly 4lb).
And yes, it was on a fly … a black & flash foam beetle.
The fish were very spooky & skittish after the first was taken,
possibly because it was so bright by then, but I will be back to find
the bigger chunks.
Some fine Tench from Lay-by Pit – 22 April 2013
Caught these at peg 13 in the Lay-by using sweetcorn presented on the pole.
Tench fishing at its best – first fish on first drop in, then 7 more in 3 hours. What a nice place to fish – well done to Bungay club.
A great Bream session at Lay-by Pit – 6 April 2013
Ian Moore had a day at the layby pit on 6th april 2013, pics above, biggest bream over 14lbs – and a good Tench too!
Good Chub session on Bungay Common – March 2013
Good session on stick float and maggot first weekend of March on the common for 11 chub up to just over 4 lbs.
I had one first chuck, 6 in the first hour, but after two more I lost one and went 30 minutes without a bite.
I moved 50 yds downstream to another alder tree and had 3 more.
After fishing the common for over 30 years, that was my best ever day there for chub, but the roach fishing definitely ain’t what it was!
