Bungay Cherry Tree Angling Club is sad to advise it’s Members that Geoffrey Riches recently passed away.
Geoff was a great enthusiast of the River, writing many letters to the Environment Agency over a forty-year period.
He is well known for having financed independently and legally endorsed by the EA, then under Suffolk County AAA control, the unsuccessful introduction of 100 – 8″ Barbel to Bungay Common at the Golf Course Shallows in 1990.
He sculpted some Shallow riffles by hand and was a keen aqua insects recorder and entomologist.
He taught several of today’s enthusiastic and successful anglers as boys, including Joe Beckham, of his never-ending love of big 2 lbs roach “with scales the size of sixpences”.
Often controversial, a more well-meaning and sincere admirer of his beloved Upper Waveney would be hard to find.
The Club offers its sincere condolences to Geoff’s family and friends.
